Notes and Definitions

Student enrollment data is based on headcount and compiled using census files created on the 21st day after the official first day of each Fall semester.

This workbook is limited to students who identify as American Indian or Alaska Native in Legacy IPEDS Race/Ethnicity.

Tribal Affiliation: Students are counted once in every tribal affiliation in which they self-identified in UAccess Student; therefore, the sum of the count for each tribal affiliation will total more than the census headcount.

Academic Career:  Each student enrolled at the university has one or more academic plans.  Academic plans determine the program of study as well as indicate the student’s status as an undergraduate or graduate/first professional.

Incoming First-Year Undergraduate Cohort:  Replaces IPEDS terminology of First-Time undergraduate student; A student who has no prior postsecondary experience (except as noted below) attending any institution for the first time at the undergraduate level. This includes students enrolled in academic or occupational programs. It also includes students enrolled in the fall term who attended college for the first time in the prior summer term, and students who entered with advanced standing (college credits or recognized postsecondary credential earned before graduation from high school).

New Undergraduate Transfer Cohort: Replaces IPEDS terminology of ‘Transfer-in (non-first-time entering) student’; A student entering the reporting institution for the first time but known to have previously attended a postsecondary institution at the same level (e.g., undergraduate, graduate). This includes new students enrolled in the fall term who transferred into the reporting institution the prior summer term. The student may transfer with or without credit. For systems of coordinated institutions (multi-campus system), students are to be identified as transfer-in students upon entering an institution from another institution within the same coordinated system.

Transfer Institution: Institution listed is the last attended by the student prior to the University of Arizona.

Legacy IPEDS Race/Ethnicity: Based on legacy (pre-2010) federal reporting standards that have persisted for internal reporting needs, students will be placed into the highest single ranked race/ethnicity grouping that they have provided from the list below:
1. American Indian or Alaska Native
2. Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
3. Hispanic or Latinx
4. Black or African American
5. Asian
6. White
7. Not Reported (Unknown/Other)
8. All International Students studying in the United States under various visa categories are grouped under ‘International’

The use of Legacy IPEDS Race/Ethnicity is unique to this workbook; therefore, the values shown here will not match values shown on the Interactive Fact Book on the University Analytics & Institutional Research website, which uses Inclusive Race/Ethnicity and IPEDS Race/Ethnicity.

Full Time Equivalent Enrollment (FTE): A measure used to assess enrollment by assuming that all students are studying on a full-time basis. FTE provides a standardized way to evaluate and compare enrollment levels across different institutions or student populations.

CDS FTE: The method used to calculate FTE in the College Board's Common Data Set (CDS). CDS FTE is calculated by multiplying the part-time student headcount by 1/3 and then summing that total with the full-time student headcount.
